Following her heartbreaking and unforgettable rendition of Memory in last year’s Cats, Jennifer Hudson proves herself a vocal powerhouse once again as Aretha Franklin in the first trailer for Respect. Transforming into the Queen of Soul, Hudson stars in the film that chronicles the highs and lows of Franklin’s life and career as she blossoms from a young gospel singer in Detroit to a soul superstar known across the world. Hudson leads a star-studded ensemble cast including Marc Maron, Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, and Mary J. Blige. Music biopics have always been a route to awards season success, and following the recent triumphs of Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman, Respect already stands out as a real contender. What more, Hudson appears to perfectly cast and shines so brightly in the trailer alone that you can well envision the Academy Award winner claiming her second Oscar after her Best Supporting Actress win for Dreamgirls back in 2007.
