Set fifty years after William Friedkin’s horror classic, the suitably scary trailer draws upon themes from the original and intercuts shock imagery and soundbites of Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells to set a terrifying yet enticing tone for a film that promises to expand on the mythology and unleash a new era of terror. It introduces Leslie Odom Jr as a single father who’s desperate for help after his twelve-year-old daughter and her best friend are rescued after going missing for three days, only to have brought something back with them. As the sinister presence takes hold and the nightmare worsens, he turns to a neighbour, played by Ann Dowd, who points him in the direction of someone with firsthand experience of possession. The Exorcist: Believer brings Ellen Burstyn back to her iconic role as Chis MacNeil, who will come face to face with evil again, and one that bares stark similarity to the one that infected her daughter Regan five decades before. Only this time, the stakes are set higher as both girls are possessed. Whether it’s the same one she faced before or an all-new evil, all will be revealed when the first film in the rebooted trilogy from David Gordon Green and Blumhouse, who reunite from their resurrection of the Halloween franchise, comes to cinemas October 6.
