Bloodline
After booting up a fresh, ferocious take on Resident Evil, Johannes Roberts returns for another round of horror. This time, he’s going ape.
Words Andrew Dex
Johannes Roberts is no stranger to horror. Outside of his chilling visit to the legendary zombie setting in Welcome To Raccoon City, he’s left audiences gasping on the edge of their seat with 47 Metres Down, a shark-infested descent into claustrophobic dread at the bottom of the sea. His style is unrelenting, and Primate promises to carry that same brutal edge.
When a family take their adopted chimpanzee, Ben, on a Hawaiian holiday, an unexpected event turns their idyllic escape into a full blown, blood-filled battle for primal survival. Once part of the family – now a rabid predator – Ben turns on them, picking them off one by one.
Led by Johnny Sequoya, Jessica Alexander, and Academy Award and BAFTA-winner Troy Kotsur, the cast is thrown into the whirlwind chaos of unexpected twists and turns as well as visceral action sequences best suited for the biggest screen possible. There’s a strong emphasis on practical effects, too, further celebrating horror in all its raw glory.
Co-written with longtime collaborator Ernest Riera, the film showcases a creative team well-versed in isolating audiences in the most desperate, pulse-pounding situations possible.
Those that dare enter this primate’s jungle are in for a savage, unforgettable ride.
Apes Together Strong
King Kong
Ever since scaling the Empire State Building in 1933, Kong has reigned as a cinematic titan. His stomp through film history has seen him cause carnage alongside some of Hollywood heavyweights like Jack Black, Samuel L. Jackson, and, of course, Godzilla.
Caesar
Brought to life through groundbreaking motion capture technology pioneered by Andy Serkis, the modern Planet Of The Apes saga is both visually stunning and emotionally epic. At its heart is Caesar: a fiercely intelligent and deeply layered primate.
Gordy
Nope is the kind of film you don’t get from the trailer alone, you just have to watch it. When you do, it’s feral chimp Gordy who you’ll never forget after one of the most horrifying and disturbing sequences in recent movie history.
