Tessa Ensler is winning the game of life and her career is soaring sky-high. Young, ambitious, and unmatched in the courtroom, she’s quickly become the go-to barrister for high-profile sexual assault cases. Often representing accused men, she earns a ruthless reputation for securing their freedom.

But what goes up so often comes crashing down. Tessa’s world shatters when she becomes the victim of the very crime she so often defends. With her faith in the justice system breaking and her career suddenly in freefall, she must fight both for herself and for her future through the brutal trials that follow.

Adapted from the acclaimed, Tony-winning play of the same name, Prima Facie is an intense, unflinching, and urgent crime drama driven by a fierce message and an equally formidable cast. Bringing together talents from the stage and screen, Emmy, Grammy, and Tonywinner Cynthia Erivo stars alongside Daniel Ings, Toheeb Jimoh, Noma Dumezweni, and BAFTA, Tony, and Olivier Award-winning national treasure Simon Russell Beale.

Beliefs will be tested as Tessa confronts the painful truth that the law she once championed can feel very different from the other side.

Stage To Screen

Before adapting Prima Facie for the screen, Australian playwright Suzi Miller had already ignited global attention with her blistering one-woman play. Premiering in Sydney in 2019, Prima Facie quickly picked up awards from the Australian Writers’ Guild before leaping to the West End and Broadway, powered by Jodie Comer’s electrifying performance in the lead role. Comer claimed the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress among other prestigious honours. The film adaptation isn’t the first time Prima Facie has reached cinemas, however. In 2022, a production of the play at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London was filmed and screened live in cinemas around the world part of National Theatre Live.
