The year’s most BAFTA-nominated film is now also its most Oscar-nominated as Oppenheimer builds on its incredible success with thirteen nominations across the categories. Its nominations include those for Christopher Nolan, for Directing and Writing (Adapted Screenplay); several of the technical and production categories; and for Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, and Robert Downey Jr in three acting categories. Of course, such acclaim and recognition sets it as the firm favourite in the race for Best Picture.

That being said, it does face strong competition in another bumper Best Picture category where it’s named alongside American Fiction, The Holdovers, Killers Of The Flower Moon, Maestro, Poor Things, and The Zone Of Interest. But that’s not all, three female-directed films – Anatomy Of A Fall, Past Lives, and Barbie – complete the category in an Oscars’ first.

Among the eight nominations for Barbie was for America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling in their respective supporting acting cateogies, as well as two nominations in Music, with Billie Eilish’s What Was I Made For and the film’s anthemic earworm I’m Just Ken named in competition.

The strongest competition Oppenheimer faces is more likely from Poor Things or Killers Of The Flower Moon, each of which receiving nominations in the double figures. In more Oscars' history, Martin Scorsese becomes a ten-time Best Director nominee, while Emma Stone becomes a four-time Oscar-nominee and potential two-time winner herself. Her Golden Globe-winning performance at the heart of Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things is an expected frontrunner for Best Actress, where she’s joined by fellow nominees Annette Bening, Lily Gladstone, Sandra Hüller, Carey Mulligan. Meanwhile, the Leading Actor category is completed by Bradley Cooper, Colman Domingo, Paul Giamatti, and Jeffrey Wright. The acting nominees named in competition for their supporting roles are Robert De Niro, Danielle Brooks, Jodie Foster, Mark Ruffalo, Sterling K. Brown, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

Lanthimos is joined by the directors of two international features, Anatomy Of A Fall’s Justine Triet and The Zone Of Interest’s Jonathan Glazer to complete the Director category.
