Against the backdrop of tense Geiger counter clicks and booming score, the epic trailer brings the key players together, puts all of the components in place, raises world-ending stakes, and lights the fuse for a film that will thrust audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it. The Peaky Blinders star looks perfectly cast as pained theoretical physicist Robert J Oppenheimer as the trailer sees him execute his planning, testing, and detonation of the world’s first nuclear weapon. From its sprawling cast to Christopher Nolan’s practical effects – including a real-life recreation of a nuclear explosion without the use of CGI – so much talk has surrounded the project and now a full trailer finally brings our best look at it yet. As a contemplative character study, the new film from the director of The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk, and Tenet appears to more down to earth than his most recent endeavours, but is no less mind-blowing in its scale. Even amid such world-changing stakes and the promise of cinematic sequences the size of which have rarely been seen before, perhaps it’s the enormous ensemble cast that Nolan has assembled to bring the life of the father of the atom bomb’s story to the big screen that’s most eye catching. The trailer brings first detailed looks at the roles filled by the likes of Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr, Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Hartnett, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, and more. Meet the man who made the atom bomb in cinemas July 21.
