In 90s New York City, recent grad and aspiring writer Joanna (Margaret Qualley) lands a job as assistant to J.D. Salinger's literary agent Margaret (Sigourney Weaver). While responding to Salinger's fanmail, she becomes reluctant to send the agency's generic letter, and begins personalising each response. Joanna, in adopting the great writer's voice, soon begins to discover her own.
