The Hustle Is Here

She’ll Hathaway your wallet and she’s called Rebel for a reason. Together, they're on a scamming spree to bring the laughs as well as the lucre.

Crime: it’s no laughing matter and it doesn’t pay. Unless we’re talking Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson of course, and then it’s belly-laughs all the way to the bank. Preparing to earn its money is The Hustle, Chris Addison’s debut directorial feature in which Wilson’s small-scale trickster teams up with Hathaway’s high-end con to stick it to the man.

Should we actually be giving these con-women their props, though? Of course we should. These modern-day Robin Hoods are ripping off the men who’ve wronged and underestimated our heroines. Unfortunately, that includes a tech millionaire, played by Alex Sharp, who might also end up getting his heart stolen in the process.

Scams and set-ups aplenty give Wilson and Hathaway the opportunities to show off their comedy chops with a crocodile tear-jerking masterclass, pratfalls galore, and the most compelling reason to wear a “trashy” dress that we’ve ever heard. So slick is The Hustle’s deception that it took us a while to catch that it’s a thinly-veiled remake of 1988’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Nearly got us, there.

Hollywood’s Most Wanted Con-Artists

Danny Ocean – Ocean’s Eleven

On the run after knocking off three Las Vegas casinos, master thief Ocean (George Clooney) can be identified via his suave aesthetic, silver fox bouffant, and omnipresent espresso. Amount stolen: $150 million.

Frank Abagnale Jr. – Catch Me If You Can

Abagnale Jr (Di Caprio) is a high-end con hiding in plain sight as a doctor, an airline pilot, or a lawyer. Noticeable as the only person still using a cheque book. Amount stolen: by his own admission, $2.5 million (if you believe him).

Charlie Croker – The Italian Job (1969)

Wanted for an elaborate gold bullion heist in the city of Turin, Croker (Michael Caine) was last seen driving a Mini Cooper whilst shouting in Cockney rhyming slang. Amount stolen: £100 million (adjusted for inflation).
