Bringing the true story of Greville Wynne to the big screen for the first time, The Courier spills the secrets about the British businessman who became a spy during the Cold War to help prevent World War III. Benedict Cumberbatch stars the smart and sharply-dressed salesman who is recruited by MI6 and Rachel Brosnahan’s CIA operative to smuggle secrets out of the Soviet Union. As you’d expect, and the trailer highlights, Wynne is far from spy material, but being ordinary is what makes him a perfect candidate for this mission. Against the wishes of his wife Sheila, played by Jessie Buckley, he accepts and heads to Moscow under the guise of exactlly what he is, nothing more than an ordinary businessman. Cumberbatch is one of the frontrunners Bond fans see as a potential 007 following Daniel Craig’s departure so they will certainly enjoy seeing a sample of his espionage as Wynne embarks on a dangerous mission behind the Iron Curtain. Once there, he forms an unlikely partnership with Soviet officer Oleg Penkovsky, played by Homeland and McMafia’s Merab Ninidze, to collect intel to prevent the Cuban missile crisis and ultimately prevent a potential Third World War. The Courier is currently set to release in cinemas on March 19.
