Broadcast via global live stream from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theatre, actress-comedian Tiffany Haddish and actor-director Andy Serkis announced the 90th Academy Awards nominations yesterday.

Much like with the BAFTA nominations, The Shape Of Water has blown the competition out of the water with a record-equalling thirteen nominations. Guillermo del Toro’s fairytale romance between a mute woman and an aquatic creature is nominated for best picture, best director, best screenplay, acting awards for Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, and Richard Jenkins, and a number of technical categories.

Christopher Nolan’s war epic Dunkirk isn’t far behind with eight nominations including best picture, director, and cinematography.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, The Post, Lady Bird, Get Out, Call Me By Your Name, Phantom Thread, and Darkest Hour complete the rest of the best picture contenders.

Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award winners Gary Oldman and Frances McDormand look set to continue their streak as strong favourites in the best actor and best actress categories.

There are a few surprises – The Boss Baby as best animated film has raised a few eyebrows – and there are sure to be plenty more on the night. Here’s hoping that the correct winners are announced.
