Though bloody and brutal by the end, the first look at the new film in the expanding Sony Spider-Man Universe begins comparatively calmly as it takes through the origin story of one of Marvel’s most iconic Spider-Man villains. Before Aaron Taylor-Johnson is revealed as Sergei Kravinoff, we go back in time to meet him as a child and how he was raised by his big game hunter father’s cruel hand and eventually left for dead after being attacked by a lion they were hunting. Jump forward a few years to the present day and we meet grown-up Sergei, who has not only survived the attack, but in doing so inexplicably gains superhuman abilities and an incredible connection to animals. Now, the antihero is on the hunt to take out the evil his father puts into the world. In addition to showcasing the visceral violence and action this R-rated retelling of the Marvel antihero, the trailer also shows off the all-star cast with Russell Crowe starring as Sergei’s father, Fred Hechinger as his half-brother, Ariana DeBose as the mysterious Calypso, and Alessandro Nivola who transforms into The Rhino in the closing moments, meaning there’s more than one human-animal hybrid on the hunt in cinemas December 13.
