The trailer finds the director of The Lost City Of Z and Ad Astra reminiscing about his childhood in 1980s New York as we meet a young Jewish boy who befriends an African American boy only to find their friendship is forbidden by his family and the wider community. Armageddon Time is a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age tale set in an America at a time of turmoil and change and follows a young boy as he navigates the systemic racism of the era he was born into as well as his part in his family’s pursuit of the elusive American Dream. The premise may be much more down to earth than Gray’s previous films, but this moving memoir remains enormous in scope and paints an immersive and meticulous portrait of Reagan-era America as showcased by the stunning cinematography in the trailer. The key selling point however is surely it’s cast with Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong, and Anthony Hopkins all in starring roles. Newcomers Banks Repeta and Jaylin Webb star as the would-be young James Gray and his new friend respectively. There’s also a glimpse of Jessica Chastain’s cameo as Maryanne Trump to complete an irresistible ensemble. Armageddon Time in cinemas November 18.
