Have you heard the one about the doctor, the nurse, and the lawyer who witness a murder only to become prime suspects and end up stumbling upon one of the most outrageous conspiracies in American history? Well, that’s the premise of the preposterous period crime-comedy from the critically-acclaimed writer-director of Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle that, believe it or not, is based on real events – well, almost.

Returning with his first film in seven years, director David O. Russell plays fast and loose with the truth for a thirties-set caper that follows a trio of friends who meet during the First World War and make a pact to protect each other at all costs. The strength of their bond is all that’s keeping them safe when they’re accused of a murder they didn’t commit and set out to prove their innocence only to uncover a shocking secret that will change the course of American history if spilled.

Matching an outrageous true story with hilarious historical inaccuracy, there’s certainly potential for plenty  of fun with this whodunnit – and that’s without mentioning the star-studded cast that’s to die for.

The aforementioned trio of Hollywood titans get top billing, but they’re only the beginning of an extraordinary ensemble that includes Chris Rock, Michael Shannon, Anya Taylor-Joy, Rami Malek, Taylor Swift, Zoe Saldaña, Alessandro Nivola, Andrea Riseborough, Matthias Schoenaerts, Mike Myers, and  Robert De Niro.

The stage is set for something the likes of which we’ve never seen before, and that’s the truth.

A Serious Contender

After making his start on the dark comedy scene with Flirting With Disaster, Three Kings, and I Heart Huckabees, David O. Russell became a real contender with The Fighter. His hit boxing biopic received six Oscar nominations and wins for Christian Bale and Melissa Leo. That success was surpassed with offbeat romcom Silver Linings Playbook, earning eight nominations and a Best Actress Oscar for Jennifer Lawrence. American Hustle was next and the star-studded screwball con-artist comedy claimed a whopping ten nominations. While he didn’t quite hit those heights with Joy, the Hollywood heavyweight’s reputation for bringing the best out of his stars remains firmly intact. Returning with a sharp script and his mightiest A-list ensemble yet, expectations are high for Amsterdam with one eye already on awards season.
