Fast-forward three hundred years and gaze into the mysterious eyes of cyborg protagonist Alita (Rosa Salazar), found unconscious by scientist Dr Dyson Ido (Christoph Waltz) in the scrapyards of Iron City, a lower level zone of future earth. She has a human brain but no recollection of who she is and where she belongs in this world.

When Alita’s previously untapped, warrior-like abilities start to emerge, she attracts unwanted attention from dangerous villains Chiren (Jennifer Connelly), Vector (Mahershala Ali), and knife-handed cyborg Screwhead (Elle LaMont), who all feel she threatens the natural order of things. With the aid of her knowledgeable caregiver Ido and more street-savvy friend Hugo (Keean Johnson), she starts to discover more about her true origins and potential.

Producers James Cameron, Jon Landau, and director Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) were keen to faithfully recreate the lead character from the original works by Japanese graphic novelist Yukito Kishiro. She is clearly distinct from her human counterparts yet very much relatable in her struggle for empowerment and meaning.

Her unique powers mean that she is able to take on the dark beings hunting her. Expect cyborgs going at each other metal to metal. A fight for her survival, over the course of the story, becomes a fight for justice. But in a tale about power, purpose, and belonging, will the complex heroine prove to be an angel of heaven or an angel of death?

The Key Components To Make A Manga Movie Machine

The Story

James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez have deeply studied the original works in order to provide a faithful genre adaptation and a story that works for global audiences too. Cameron has wanted to make this for over ten years and provides the screenplay here!

The Cast

Great care has been taken to assemble all parts of the team. Featuring three Academy Award winners and exciting upcoming performances from Rosa Salazar and Keean Johnson, the cast collection looks cyborg strong.

The Visuals

Leaving debate on Alita’s remarkable eyes aside the film intends to captivate audiences from minute one, harnessing technology used for the Avatar films and blending with live action sizzle.

The Sound

Alita features a tense, pulsing and evocative music score from Junkie XL (of Mad Max; Fury Road fame). Junkie was encouraged to get creative by Rodriguez who normally composes his own themes.
