Having already conquered the video game world multiple times thanks to seven generations of Nintendo RPGs, the Pokémon franchise is once again setting its sights on cinema – in live-action form for the very first time. Ryan Reynolds takes on the title role as the wise-cracking electrified critter, joining forces with Tim (Justice Smith), who acts as the only person capable of understanding him.

Both find themselves swept up in a deep mystery that involves the disappearance of Tim’s father and legendary Ryme City detective Harry Goodman. Their journey will see them cross paths with an eclectic cast of familiar Pokémon – including Charizard, Greninja, Mr Mime, and others – as eventually, with the help of Detective Pikachu, Tim uncovers a wider plot threatening the whole Pokémon universe.

This latest Pokémon effort is directed by Rob Letterman, a filmmaker most famous for other family-friendly fare like Shark Tale, Gulliver’s Travels, and Goosebumps. This ensures that the movie will have enough fun and frolics for everyone who sees it, being a largely standalone adventure that can be enjoyed by those with or without a prior knowledge of the Pokémon franchise’s long legacy.
